First topic message reminder :

Harrison to sit out

Quote :
Even with his strong recovery from surgery on both knees, Indianapolis Colts receiver Marvin Harrison likely won't play Sunday in the Hall of Fame preseason game against the Washington Redskins. The 13-year NFL veteran will make the trip to Canton but is expected to watch from the sideline, Colts coach Tony Dungy said Friday. Dungy said nothing has happened in camp to hinder Harrison's return.

Second defensive series
L->R: Brock, Dawson, Johnson, Thomas

* Redskins run a power left, netting 7 yards. The LG and C engage Johnson, and the LG is able to seal Johnson off and take him out of the play. Thomas runs upfield, making it easy for the LT to push him out of the play. Wash has a FB leading through a good sized hole and puts a hat on Keiaho long enough for the RB to go by. We were very simply beat in every gap playside.

* Play action holds the LB’s long enough for QB to make a quick pass to WR on a outside curl route. Same O-line blocking strategy of doubling Johnson and singling of Dawson. Brock is sandwiched by the RT and TE, and gets very little movement in from the LOS. Thomas runs an OPR, but the throw is too quick for him to get there and cause any pressure. Pass is complete for about 8 yards, and the corners are playing well off of the wideouts, making these short passes so effective. Quick pass + big cushion = completion on us most of the time.

* Good playfake holds the LB’s and creates an open zone about 15 yards down the field on our right side. Thomas fakes outside and attempts to rush inside, but is negated. Brock bull rushes and gets about two yards of penetration before the tackle stands his ground. Same situation again for the tackles, who get no pressure whatsoever.

* Brock pushes the RT upfield, then pushes him away and pass rushes the QB to the inside. QB moves to his left slightly to try and avoid Brock, but Thomas has spin moved away from the LT and is put in the perfect position of having the QB step right into his arms. Dawson was able to get away from his blocker late in the play, but after the QB was already under duress. Johnson is again double teamed, and even chipped by the releasing RB.

* Draw play. Thomas is left unblocked by the LT, who heads upfield to put a hat on a LB. Dawson creates a disruption by cutting across from left to right with his blocker, as Thomas closes in on the RB. Johnson is not able to beat his double team, which has pushed him to the left, but he is able to squeeze enough through them to get an arm on the ball carrier. That, and Thomas’ pursuit forces the RB to cut outside right, where he is tackled by Marlin Jackson and Showell. It was a 2 &17 for a short gain of 2.

* Howard is in for Thomas at RDE, Mathis in for Brock at LDE. It’s hard to tell, but I believe Brock moved down and Johnson is out. We play a soft coverage, which allows them a pass up the middle for about 9 yards…not enough for a 1st down. Both ends run OPR, and Howard is chipped by the RB. Mathis is negated. Neither DT gets penetration, though they ran a stunt.

Third defensive series
L->R: Thomas, Foster, Ferrell, Charleston

* We are in a nickel package as Wash is in a 3 WR set. Foster is double teamed, pushed back and down to the ground. Ferrell is single blocked and is able to attempt to get his pads on the RB as he continues to be engaged by his blocker, but the RB is able to get by him. Charleston made an inside move, but the running back cuts it outside of Charleston, taking him out of the play. Thomas was effectively blocked by the TE. Shotwell is blocked downfield by a lineman, making plenty of room for the RB to get to the second level and gain 8 yards. Nice tackle by the safety, Condren

* Condren creeps the LOS and pops the TE, who he then covers and limits to a gain of about 1-1/2 yards. This is a designed very quick pass play by Wash, expected to get 2-3 yards, but Condren again made a nice hit and a nice tackle. Ferrell stunts behind Foster, and Foster was able to get decent penetration to the QB even though he had 2-3 blockers. The stunt allowed Ferrell to get into some open space, and he would’ve had at least a QB pressure had Wash not run such a quick designed play. Both ends run OPR and are not a factor.

* 3 WR set, nickel package. Play action fake to TE who released from blocking assignment. Thomas gets a free run at the QB when the TE releases, but can’t get there in time to stop the play. Foster and Ferrell are pretty much negated at the LOS, and Charleston is easily handled by the LT on the backside of the play, which gains 9 yards

* False start

* 2 WR, 1 TE, FB, RB set, we’re still in our nickel package. DT’s are playing more of an outside technique (3), as no one is over the center. Foster gets penetration past the outside of the OT blocking him (the guard released to the second level), but the ballcarrier is already past his position. Reid, who is in for Ferrell and at RDT, is single blocked and pushed out of his gap to his right about 3 or 4 yards. Howard is in for Charleston at the RDE, and is able to shed his blocker and get in on the tackle with Shotwell (LB) and Silva (S). Shotwell did a good job shedding his blocker with a sidestep to help make the play. Charleston is playing LDE, in place of Thomas.

* Marcus Howard looks ripped, and standing next to Darrell Reid, Howard has the bigger arms. This kid is pretty jacked. 3 WR set, nickel package, L->R: Charleston, Foster, Reid, Howard. Charleston and Foster jump offsides, but get back in time. Nice spin move by Foster to get by his initial blocker, but he spun directly into another blocker and was stuffed. Charleston OPR and has no impact other than to set the deepness of the pocket. Reid makes a nice swim move to get past his single blocker and put pressure on the QB from behind. Howard sheds the TE upfield, goes inside and really lays a good lick on the QB from the side as the QB releases the ball, which is off target and incomplete. Reid and his blocker kind of picked off the OT when Howard shed him, so he had a free shot at the QB, which he took full advantage of.

* 4th down and 4, Wash punts.

Colts Ahead. thanks Tmack.

Fourth defensive series (after a safety)
L->R: C. Johnson, Foster, Bradley, Charleston

* Again, the defense overpursues to our right, and the RB makes a nice cut left. Condren fills his (large) gap, causing the RB to cut inside and into the arms of Johnson, who shed his block once he realized the ball carrier was passed him. Condren still had him by the ankles. The cutback is forced by C. Johnson, who forced his way laterally across the LOS with the TE blocking him one on one. Foster, playing the 3-tech, is pushed back rather easily by the OT who blocks down on him (perfect, technical block by their #71; he’ll get a little something for that in the film room). Both Bradley and Charleston were effectively negated with one blocker for each. Bradley, unlike Foster, was able to hold his ground at the LOS. Curtis Johnson does not look 65 pounds lighter than Joe Bradley. Run is good for only 3 yards.

* 4WR set, nickel package. This is the second play in a row that Johnson appears to be lined up in the neutral zone. He probably needs to watch that. Both ends are single block and OPR, creating a limit on the deepness of the pocket even though they weren’t able to beat their blockers. Foster swim moves his single blocking OG to get penetration, but then gets picked up by the RB. Bradley is double teamed and gets very little movement. Incomplete pass, so 3rd & 7. Actually, personal foul for a chop block on the offense, so it’ll be 2nd and 22.

* L->R: Charleston, Foster, Reid, Howard. Foster stunts behind Bradley and goes unevaded to the QB, but the handoff to the RB has already been made. Both DE’s begin rushing upfield, a man on Charleston but no one on Howard, but they both reverse their direction once they see the handoff made. Neither are a part of the play. Jennings and Shotwell fill the hole nicely, and limit the draw play to create a 3rd & 18 (gain of only 4).

* Good penetration/push by all DL. Howard is able to sack the QB even with an OT hanging off of him. Foster is single blocked and almost gets to the QB’s shoes before Howard gets him. Reid is double blocked, but it able to get within a yard or two of the QB, and with his own lineman in his face, the QB is nervous. Nice inside spin move by Howard to get to the QB.

* Punt (Rushing’s TD called back)

Fifth defensive series
L->R: C. Johnson, Foster, Ferrell, Charleston

* Johnson is blocked out of the play, which is a run to the right. Foster beats his one on one block to penetrate into our left side of the backfield. Ferrell initially is pushed back by his double team, but is able to break free (mostly) and rush upfield to be in on the play. Charleston did a nice job of shedding his TE to meet the rusher along with a couple of LB’s and Ferrell. Only a gain of 1

* Wash runs a blast. Johnson rushes upfield and out of the play. Foster (again) beats his one on one block to get penetration on our left side of the backfield, but with no other pressure up the middle, the RB runs free to the inside of Foster. Ferrell is effectively double teamed, which, coupled with Foster’s penetration to the outside of his blocking OG, creates a nice hole for the RB. Charleston is fended off long enough by the LT to not be in on the play. The FB gets a hat on the LB responsible for the gap, and the weakside backer has his view shielded by the Ferrell vs. 2 redskins, making him late to the play, which goes for 11 yards.

* L->R: Johnson, Ferrell, Foster, Charleston, with Ferrell playing the 1 technique on the left (strong) side for this play. Play action pass bootlegging away from the fake. The TE engaged Johnson and then released to catch the pass. Ferrell was blocked back a couple of yards by his double team. Foster, again, got penetration, this time by bull rushing his guard right onto his backside. The play to the TE was so quick, though, that Foster couldn’t take advantage of his good play. Charleston runs an OPR, and is easily negated by the LT. Hughes doesn’t appear to be a strong tackler.

* 3 WR set, base defense, slot in motion. Ferrell and Foster switched back. Johnson leaps over the WR that was in motion and charged with blocking him, and Johnson was almost able to make the play on the RB. Foster is double teamed by the RG & RT, and pushed out of the play to our right, creating a gap for the RB. Since Johnson doesn’t get to the RB in the backfield, it’s a gain of 8 yards. Ferrell is single blocked and is able to create some push into the backfield, but it’s to our right and away from the play. Wash has created a good seal here, and it also should be noted that they are not deviating from their run strategy of going straight up the middle on us. Charleston is once again handled by their LT, but he would have been too far away from the play to do anything anyway.

* 3 WR, strong side to our left, slot to our right. Johnson rushes upfield and attempts an inside swim move, but the pass is gone too quickly. Foster gets penetration to his left, but not in time or near enough to the QB to cause trouble. Bradley is in for Ferrell, and actually gets a little push into the pocket even though he is double teamed by the C & LG. Charleston performs an OPR, and is not part of the play.

* L->R: Johnson, Bradley, Foster, Charleston. 3 WR set, TE and slot to our right. All of our D-line is effectively blocked on this running play over the RG. Initial double teams saw the 2nd blocker make initial contact and head to the second level. Run is good for about 15 yards.

* Johnson, Ferrell, Foster, Reid. Another run, this time for 7 yards and again, right up the middle.

* Reid, Foster, Ferrell, Charleston. Foster is double teamed and pushed out of the way. Reid goes unblocked and races down the LOS to make a play on the RB, who is running off tackle. Ferrell is single blocked and fairly easily is able to push his blocker into the backfield, he only isn’t able to disengage quick enough to tackle the ball carrier. Charleston runs an OPR, and is not part of the play. Run of about 5 yards, but good for a 1st down.

* 2 WR set with FB & RB, play action pass. Reid tries to bullrush but just bounces off. Foster bull rushes his single blocker back about 4 yards, but then loses ground just as the ball is leaving the QB’s hand. Ferrell is double teamed and stalemated. Charleston runs an inside pass rush move, but the LT is able to clear him right to left in front of the QB. Pass complete for five yards.

* 3 WR set, TE to our left, slot to our right. Charleston, Foster, Reid, Howard. Charleston OPR’s, and makes a great play to knock the ball loose from the QB’s right hand from behind as he comes in for the hit. Foster is single blocked fairly well, though he does gain some ground on the RG. Reid makes a nice inside spin move to get into the pocket, but he spins right into a second blocker. Howard bull rushes the LT, then shoves him to the side to make a play on the QB, who simultaneously has the ball knocked loose by Charleston, who also comes in for the hit on the QB. Howard high, Charleston low. Fumble recovered by Wash…3rd & 12.

* L->R: Charleston, Foster, Reid, Howard. Charleston OPR’s to the QB, but he has just handed off on a draw. Foster AGAIN beats his lone blocker to penetrate into the backfield, this time with an inside swim move. Reid is double teamed and gets nowhere, but he bounces off his blockers and is able to run down the RB to assist on the tackle preventing the 1st down. Howard also OPR’s to the QB, which takes him out of the play. Play goes for 6 yards.

* FG, no good. First half is over for the defense.

Second half.

Sixth defensive series

L->R: Johnson, Bradley, Foster, Charleston

* 3WR, 1TE, 1RB. Bradley is double teamed by the C and the RG. Johnson shows a lot of lateral speed that leaves the RT bumbling. Foster is successfully blocked 1-on-1 by the LG after an unsuccessful swim move, but has his head up and recognizes the screen pass developing. Johnson run from left to right around the RT and is actually able to put real pressure on the QB on a screen play (unlike the fake pressure that is allowed). Johnson is batting at the QB’s hands as the QB releases. Charleston again on an OPR, but both him and Foster show good support and motor in tackling the RB from behind. Bradley gets free from the double team and almost makes the play from behind the LOS, but it appears the lineman executed poorly to create that opportunity.

* 3WR, 2RB set, slot man in motion from L2R. We have an off tackle run play developing, and the Skins’ blocking scheme for this play is to single up Bradley (who has lined up in the A gap to our right of center) and single block Foster. The center immediately heads to the second level to block a LB. Foster (also) immediately beats his single blocker (RG) to cause disruption of the handoff. Johnson is easily blocked by the RT. Charleston lines up outside the LT and notices the entire line blocking away from him, so he alertly pinches down his gap and makes a terrific a play on the RB behind the LOS to trip him up on a 2nd & 4. The LB’s read run the entire way (watch out of play action later), and were able to fill their gaps adequately enough so that the running back cut away from the intended hole and straight into Charleston. 3rd & 7.

*4WR, 1 RB set. Charleston is now the LE with Howard subbing in at the RE. Foster and Charleston execute what is typically called a “Jet” (a type of twist where the weak-side DT (or UT in our scheme, typically) will twist behind the DE, who is crashing in on a gap inside where he is originally lined up). Bradley is single blocked effectively by the LG. Howard twists behind Bradley, but is easily picked up by the center who did not double up on Bradley, but instead held his pass blocking position in the case of a blitzing LB. We’re able to collapse the pocket somewhat and create some pressure on the QB, but he makes a great throw over the shoulder of the receiver who catches it for a first down. They showed a replay and Jordan Senn (LB) was lined up over a slot receiver. He was very easily beaten, as we would expect.

*2WR, 2TE set. It’s hard to see who is in on this play, but Reid is one of the DL. The line does a good job of filling their gaps to stop the run play, but alas, it’s a play action, and the two playside LB’s have bitten on the fake run. Dump off to the RB for 8 yards.
Johnson, Foster, Ferrell, Charleston. Foster (again), gets penetration into the backfield, but ineffectively. Charleston is easily blocked 1-on-1 by the LT. Johnson played more of an inside technique and filled his gap well, but the RB made a cut inside pick up the first down. Ferrell was completely blown off the ball and pushed 5 yards back by a single blocker. Ferrell looked off balance and tired during this play.

*3WR, slot to the left, 1RB, strong side left, so we switch up our DT’s to Ferrell on the left and Foster on the right. Johnson OPR’s and is pushed outside of the play (over RG) by the LT, though he does get close enough to make you wonder. Ferrell (NT) is single blocked effectively out of the play by the center (center has a good angle, but Ferrell’s inability to separate from a single blocker is disheartening). Both Charleston and Foster are single blocked, but the LB’s filling gaps are able to limit the run to a 5 yard gain. Charleston got in on the tackle after disengaging from his blocker, turning around, and grabbing onto the RB.

*3 WR set, slot to our right, strong side our left. (I just want to note that I pause the DVR at the snap of the ball, and Curtis Johnson is almost always the first DL to react. Right now I’m looking at a still version of the Center putting the ball in the QB’s hands, while 3 Colts DL are still in their stance and Johnson is already out of his.) Charleston runs an inside pass rush move and is able to make the C and LG, as is easily negated. Foster drives his blocker (RG) back several yards into the pocket, far enough actually that he pushes the RG outside the back of the pocket and creates a pick for Johnson to release from the RT and make the sack. It’s more of a coverage/inexperienced QB sack, but we’ll take it. 3rd & 6 coming up.

*2TE, 2WR set, with both WR on the left side of our D. Charleston is our LE, with Howard as our RE and Johnson taking a breather. Reid was on the interior DL somewhere, but he did nothing. Howard actually goes unblocked and has a 1-on-1 shot with the RB left to pass protect, and instead of going inside or over the RB, Howard continues with the OPR. Bad decision by him. No pressure, TD pass.
